Tomato or Tomato,  all I know is going to a US summer camp has been a life-changing experience as an International.

After a cold, damp and overcast April in Northern England I asked my co-worker, “What can I be doing this summer which is different and a new life experience.” The one suggestion she spoke passionately about was working at a US summer camp. This really caught my attention. That afternoon in April 2023 I sent an application to my visa sponsor Camp America and within a week was hired as a camp counselor at Camp Takodah. This was a life changing summer with so much personal growth happening in the 3 months I had in the USA.

I then returned for another couple of summers before returning again last month as a management trainee for the next 18 months. I am so grateful for Sarah and the team for believing in me and for allowing me to follow my dreams.

Each summer Takodah welcomes numerous International staff from all over the world where they grow amazing career and life experiences. Here are a few examples of the impact Takodah has had on our International staff.

“I love the daily opportunity to learn something new from someone. Everybody comes from different backgrounds and simple conversations at shared meals times is a great way to learn different world views and deepen understanding of ourselves and others.” Santiago, Columbia

“I was really fascinated with everything, I couldn’t help it. It was the small things that made me fall in love with camp. The birds, hugs, conversations and the people. Without realising it I had found another home that was 5600km away from mine. It will always have a special place in my heart.” Clara, Spain

“My summer at Camp Takodah was the best summer of my life and I created memories that will stay with me forever. The sense of community was immediate and clearly showed that Takodah is a place where people genuinely care about each other.” Angharad, Wales

“Takodah remains in my memory as a magical place. A hidden gem in the woods. Camp not only provided me with lifelong friendships but also countless memories and personal growth. It warms my heart whenever I think about my camp memories.” Kori, Hungary

Takodah would not be the same without International staff. The wonderful thing is the relationship works both ways. Internationals gain an insight into American culture and the campers equally have the ability to learn about the international culture, influences and life in their home country.

I am looking forward to the next 18 months. I will have many ups and downs but that’s what makes life so wonderful. The ability to test yourself in unknown circumstances and situations. I thank you all for reading my story and I am eager to see where this experience takes me.
