Dear Camp Friends,

During your time as campers, you may recall a sentimental tradition that marks the end of each session at the flag area. While the setting and rituals remain familiar to every other day, something truly special unfolds as campers prepare to part ways. A series of questions are posed to the community, prompting each of us to place a hand on the shoulder of someone who has touched our hearts during our time together.

These questions vary from “Put your hand on the shoulder of someone who made you feel welcomed at camp,” to “Put your hand on the shoulder of someone who encouraged you to try something new,” and “Put your hand on the shoulder of someone who taught you a new skill.” Each interaction is a testament to the deep connections formed within our Camp Takodah family. This simple yet profound exercise captures the essence of our camp experience—a place where every camper gives, receives, and belongs.

In today’s world, where children often struggle to find their place, Camp Takodah stands apart. My favorite moment is when we’re asked to “Put your hand on the shoulder of someone you want to see back next year.” It’s a time when our entire camp community forms a circle, arms around each other, affirming the value we place on every member of our Takodah family.

I’ve chosen Camp Takodah as my summer home because these moments are invaluable to me. To effectively support our community’s needs in facility development, fundraising, and strategic planning, understanding the camper experience is essential. Having spent over 35 summers at camp, I can attest—there’s no place like Camp Takodah. “Friendly to All” isn’t just a slogan; it defines every interaction here.

At a time when many youth are battling loneliness and social pressures, the authenticity of camp relationships shines through. The bonds formed in two weeks often surpass those of an entire school year. Our early 2025 registration numbers show campers have a strong desire to return to this special community. However, it is inevitable that we also have a number of campers that age out of the program every year.

Please join us and “Boost Takodah” in spreading the word about the benefits of a summer camp experience. Tell friends, relatives, neighbors, and coworkers about how two weeks at Camp Takodah can impact a child’s life forever. Every child deserves to be part of a community that is truly “Friendly to All.”

In friendship,
